Self-portrait photographic series, drag performance

“Mirror Flower, Water Moon” is a self-portrait photographic series. It originates from an exploration of how drag queens navigate their practice in Malaysia, where cross-dressing is strictly illegal.

Historically, gender imbalances within traditional performing arts meant that many female roles in forms such as Teochew opera and Bangsawan (Malay opera) were performed by men. Although these performers engage in cross-gender performance, they are treated and recognised as cultural heritage.

Therefore, in order to gain a certain degree of protection when their performances are questioned, some drag queens incorporate elements of traditional costumes and performance into their looks.

“ If queerness were a religion, the dance of drags
would be our sacred ritual.”

When I think about the beauty in queerness, I am often drawn to the grey area that we have to dance in between so we could truly express ourselves.

In which I sometimes wonder, if oppression did not exist to begin with, what kind of sense of beauty we would have instead...?

...Perhaps it is a question I will never have an answer to.
