The title “A Mere Reflection of Flower and Moon” is from a Chinese idiom, “mirror flower, water moon (鏡花水月)”, which describes how beautiful things are often ephemeral and unattainable.
This solo exhibition is about my own interpretation on Whitney Davis’s “Queer Beauty”.

Growing up in an Islamic country as a gay person, for me, beauty is my substitute for religion.
In the book, Davis mentioned the queer aesthetic is more than just the expression of desires but also a way to break free from the oppression. I believe queer individuals often find sanctuary in beautiful things because we feel betrayed by the religions we grew up in.
「 Queer Beauty」

Beauty can become a form of spiritual survival.
Queer creativity often stems from having to reimagine the world from scratch and to find beauty where there was once pain. That shapes taste in ways that are nuanced, layered and often radical.

This exhibition features a series of my new artworks alongside furniture designed by Japanese post-war designers, including Isamu Noguchi, Tadaomi Mizunoe and Sori Yanagi.
A central theme in post-war furniture design is the removal of elaborate decoration, focusing instead on simplicity and functionality. This approach has introduced a new understanding of beauty for future generations.

The main part of the exhibition is an installation composed of works from my Pokok series.
It is inspired by the mountain behind my childhood home, a place where I often sought comfort and refuge. For me, the presence of nature, especially the trees, has always felt closer to God, or the divine, than the religion itself.
How these trees existed long before I was born and will continue to grow long after I am gone.

“ When you walk around in the woods,
you notice how each tree is its own thing.
Some stand tall and unwavering,
others grow crooked and bent.
Some keep their green through every season,
others shed themselves to the earth
again and again.
You take them in without trying to change anything.
You sort of understand how a tree might have grown a certain way.
Maybe it stretched toward whatever light it could find;
Maybe it tilted like that after listening to the wind
day after day.
There’s no judgement, no rush of emotion,
only the acceptance of its beauty.
In every uneven edge and curve,
you simply appreciate the tree.”

The idea is to transform the gallery into a small shrine filled with queer memories and rituals.
By combining these design objects, the space will allow the viewers to sit, pause and contemplate beauty not as luxury, but as necessity, much like how queer people reshape the concept of beauty.

“Crucifixion of Beauty I & II” is a series that I painted two non-existent insects composed of two distinct species, evoking the layered and constructed nature of transgender identity. The bug speciman recalls entomological preservation, where beauty is fixed, examined and pinned in place.
The title plays on the visual language as the insect appears crucified, suspended as both object of admiration and sacrifice.

In parallel, the work reflects on how trans individuals are often compelled to endure scrutiny, pain and personal sacrifice in pursuit of an “ideal” identity or socially legible beauty.
By merging bodies and species, the piece questions who defines authenticity and at what cost beauty must be achieved.

The painting, The Martyrdom of Blossoming, is the anchor of this exhibition.
It is based on my personal relationship with queer aesthetics. While this aesthetic is often praised, but rarely understood in relation to the reality that queer creativity is born from the necessity to reimagine the world from scratch and under constant pressure to find beauty where there was once pain.
For me, the growth of my queer sensibility feels like forcing a grub to act against its nature, compelled to produce silk simply to shield its own fragility. Though others admire the butterfly we become, the suffering of the grub never fully disappears. It quietly lingers, beneath the wings.

drag performance
2025. 12
@ Root K Contemporary
During the exhibition, I also did my first drag performance as Nixie Humidity, along with my friend, Andromeda.
As much as I never quite found comfort in religion, I still felt a quiet envy toward those who found a sense of belonging and certainty in their faith. For me, queerness became both my sanctuary and my substitute for religion.
So in this performance, I wanted to imagine: if queerness were a religion, perhaps the dance of drags would be our sacred ritual.
